The purpose of the Planning Commission is to assist the Town Council in anticipating and guiding future development and change by preparing plans, ordinances, capital improvement programs, studies, reports, and other documents for consideration by the Town Council. 

In the fall of 2023 the Planning Commission, with the assistance of the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission, began reviewing and updating the 2040 Comprehensive Plan.  The Planning Commission met regularly to review the chapters and make recommendations for updates and changes.  A community survey was conducted, and a public input session was held in July 2024 to gather feedback from the citizens.  A joint public hearing with the Broadway Town Council was held on September 3, 2024.  The Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend the 2045 Comprehensive Plan Update to Town Council, who then voted unanimously to adopt it.
