Route 259 (Lee Street) Linville Creek Bridge Replacement Project

Last updated: October 4, 2023

NEW BROADWAY BRIDGE SCHEDULED TO OPEN OCTOBER 12

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 4, 2023

STAUNTON – The new Lee Street (Route 259) bridge over Linville Creek in the Rockingham County town of Broadway is scheduled to open to traffic on or about Thursday, October 12. Since December 2022, contractors for the Virginia Department of Transportation have removed the old bridge and constructed a new one in the same location. During that time, Lee Street motorists have been using a traffic diversion and temporary bridge.

Although the new permanent bridge is expected to open October 12, Lee Street motorists should expect shoulder closures and occasional lane closures through spring 2024 during final phases of the project. This includes removal of the temporary bridge and its roadway approaches. Project details and traffic updates are found at https://bit.ly/Rt259BroadwayBridge.

The old Linville Creek bridge, constructed in 1951, had two 12-foot travel lanes and a four-foot wide sidewalk along the southern side of the structure. The new bridge was built in the same location but is about seven feet wider with a six-foot sidewalk.

In June 2022 VDOT awarded a $4.9 million construction contract to Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville, Va. The project has a contract completion date of April 26, 2024. All work is weather permitting, and the bridge-opening schedule is subject to change.

The VDOT Staunton District serves Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.

During the week of April 3-7, 2023, Lee Street traffic will be temporarily stopped for roughly 10 to 15 minutes at a time as contractors deliver and install a dozen steel beams for the new bridge. All work is weather permitting. Any changes to this timeline will be communicated. Broadway Police Department will be on site to help manage traffic.

Traffic flow during construction has been designed to have minimal impacts to local schools, businesses and commercial interests in the area. For everyone’s safety, please follow traffic signals and follow detour signage. Thank you for your continued patience as contractors make progress on this project.

TRAFFIC PATTERN AND SPEED LIMIT CHANGES THIS DECEMBER ON LEE STREET IN BROADWAY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 28, 2022

STAUNTON – The work-zone speed limit on Lee Street (Route 259) in the town of Broadway will be reduced to 25 miles an hour beginning Thursday, December 1. The speed limit reduction will protect work crews and motorists at the Linville Creek bridge replacement project, between Holly Hill Street and Main Street (Route 42).

On or about Tuesday, December 6, Lee Street traffic is scheduled to begin using a temporary bridge over Linville Creek. This allows contractors to demolish the old bridge and construct a permanent replacement.

The temporary crossing is expected to serve traffic from December 2022 through November 2023. During this phase of the project, there will be no dedicated right-turn lane from eastbound Lee Street onto Main Street. A single lane will serve motorists going straight and turning right at this intersection.

Motorists are expected to begin using the new permanent bridge in November 2023, and should expect minor traffic restrictions through spring 2024 during final phases of the project.

During all stages of construction, motorists should be alert to avoid blocking access to cross streets and adjacent businesses. Pedestrians are prohibited from entering the work zone. There is no pedestrian access on the current Linville Creek bridge, and there will be no pedestrian accommodations on the temporary bridge.

VDOT will share traffic and construction updates at https://bit.ly/Rt259BroadwayBridge. All work is weather permitting.

The existing Linville Creek bridge was built in 1951 and has reached the end of its service life.
