NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
PROPOSED BUDGET AND TAX AND FEE INCREASES

TOWN OF BROADWAY, VIRGINIA

The Town of Broadway will conduct a public hearing on the proposed annual budget for Fiscal Year 2024-2025, and the proposed increases in rates and fees as set forth below, on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Town Hall located at 116 Broadway Avenue, Broadway, VA 22815. Members of the public are invited to attend and present comments on the proposed budget, tax rates, and fees.

A copy of the proposed budget and the Ordinance is on file at the Town of Broadway Town Hall, 116 Broadway Avenue, Broadway, VA 22815, and is available for reviewing Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with a lunch closure daily from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., and at broadwayva.gov. Any person requiring special accommodations in attending or participating in the public hearing should contact Cari Orebaugh, Deputy Town Manager at (540) 896-5152 at least five days prior to the public hearing.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
REGARDING INCREASE IN LEVY
OF REAL ESTATE TAX AND CIGARETTE TAX
 
TOWN OF BROADWAY, VIRGINIA
Notice is hereby given that the Town Council (the “Council”) of the Town of Broadway, Virginia (the “Town”) will hold a public hearing pursuant to the provisions of Section 58.1-3007 of the Code of Virginia (1950), as amended, to receive public comment on the adoption by the Council of two proposed Ordinances (the “Ordinances”) which will (a) increase the Town’s rate of real estate taxation from $0.07/$100 of assessed value, to $0.10/$100 of assessed value; and (b) increase the Town’s tax on cigarettes from $0.01 per cigarette, to $0.0125 per cigarette.
 
The Town is authorized to impose a real estate tax under the provisions of Virginia Code § 58.1-3200.  The Town is authorized to impose a tax on cigarettes under the authority of Virginia Code §§ 58.1-3830 and 58.1-3840, and § 2.2 of the Town Charter.
 
The effect of the cigarette tax increase is to increase the Town tax on a pack of 20 cigarettes from $0.20 to $0.25.
 
The public hearing, which may be continued or adjourned, will be held on or about 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, before the Council in the Town Council Chambers, located in the Broadway Town Office, 116 Broadway Avenue, Broadway, Virginia.  Any person interested in the Ordinance may appear at the hearing and present his or her views.  The Council may set rules and procedures for the conduct of this public hearing.
 
A copy of the proposed Ordinances along with associated documentation is on file and available for public review in the Town Offices located at 116 Broadway Avenue, Broadway, Virginia, during regular business hours.  Written comments regarding the proposed Ordinance may be forwarded either to the Deputy Town Manager prior to the public hearing at the address stated herein, or to the Council during the public hearing.  Requests for special assistance should be made to the Deputy Town Manager on or before Noon on Friday, May 3, 2024; such requests should specify the nature of the assistance required.
